Pruning Heritage roses needs a little more care and thought than pruning the ubiquitous Hybrid Tea.
There are several questions to be considered:
Is it a repeat flowerer or does it only flower once a year?
Does it bloom on new wood or second year growth?
Will it produce hips if left - and so on?
The answers to these questions and other factors should influence your approach to pruning Heritage Roses.
The Victoria State Rose Garden has a large and varied collection of heritage roses and a dedicated group of volunteers who help with the maintenance of the Roses.
To assist in the task of pruning these roses Wal Johnston has prepared a very thorough set of notes which are reproduced here with his kind permission.
